Pontormo: Miraculous Encounters

At the end of the 1520s, during the siege that brought to an end the last Florentine Republic, the painter Jacopo da Pontormo created one of the most moving and innovative altarpieces, the Visitation. Recent conservation has created the extraordinary opportunity for the work to travel for the first time from Carmignano (near Florence) to the United States. This exhibition presents Pontormo’s spectacular painting alongside its preparatory drawing and two exceptional portraits painted during the same tumultuous period. Cost is $72, to be billed; includes transportation and snacks. Please sign up in the Mail Room; a minimum of 20 sign-ups are needed.

Guided Westmont Garden Tour

Time

1:00 pm - Bus Departure

Details

The Westmont Garden was started 8 years ago by former Westmont alumni with the intention of bringing students into contact with the art of growing food. Since then, it has grown to an acre of land, and has acquired a beehive and a flock of chickens. It hosts classes for educational purposes as well as volunteers through our Garden Club. Local volunteers, seeking beauty and healing in a natural setting full of life’s growth cycles are more than welcome to join in. The produce grown is served in Westmont’s Dining Commons, and given to garden volunteers. Our garden guide, Kenny Chism, stepped into the manager role after graduating with a Biology degree 2017.

While growing up, Kenny lived in a home with limited outdoor space to grow a vegetable and herb garden. And so it was during his freshman year, when he started volunteering in the Westmont Garden that his passion for working with plants was ignited. Watching seeds sprout and grow into fruit bearing plants, continues to instill a sense of magic and beauty in the organic garden, which Kenny loves to share with garden visitors

Casa Totems Created and Donated to the Music Academy

Time

2:30 pm - Bus Departure

Details

The Women's Auxiliary of the Music Academy of the West debuts a new benefit event, Music in the Gardens - World Rhythms, an eclectic program of musicians and dance artists who will perform global music including Indonesian, Island Rhythms, Middle Eastern, Celtic, French and Italian Folk, and Flamenco/Latino. Stroll the iconic gardens at the Music Academy of the West, while sampling intercontinental cuisine along with a perfect complement of wine. The Auxiliary is one of the largest and most successful supporting volunteer organizations in Santa Barbara, and when they first learned about our very own Totem Pole installation by the Casa Dining Room, they approached us with the idea and desire to have a unique totem pole created for their silent auction in October. Five Casa artists volunteered, springing into action to create a stunning, one of a kind totem pole. For more information and advanced tickets ($125), please call 805-969-8787, or visit online at www.musicacademy.org/gardens.

The sign-up sheet is in the Mail Room. Transportation will be provided with a minimum of 5 attendees.
