After the originator, Nelson Howard, started a speakers’ program exclusively for Casa Dorinda residents, several residents volunteered to continue this series. Bayless Griggs, moderated for 6 years. Gus Supplee for 4 years, and Dr. Eugene Ellis for 3 years. Then in 2010, Mary Griggs asked me to take over the program, and Arthur Schultz, was my first speaker in September 2010. Now, 8 years later, and with our May 2018 speaker, Dr. Ted Thoreson, in the History books, we completed a total of 57 programs, all done with Melissa Gill Hausz, Director of Activities. I must thank you one and all, Casa residents, for your support, your ever continuing patronage as an audience, and your thanks to us after each show. That made our efforts truly worthwhile. Now it’s time to pass the moderator-baton! Historically, the moderator has been a Casa gentleman. With great pleasure, I would like to announce the newly appointed husband-and-wife team of Chuck Atkins and Kristin Demong. In doing so, we have the added strength and view-point of a lady, working with a gentleman, to explore future subjects, speakers, and panels of staff and MRA members for the NHRS program. Over the past 8 years the programs have been a challenging and exciting experience, and with the vigor of a new creative team, the NHRS will shine even brighter on your future Casa entertainment schedule.

Activities is putting together a three-night trip to Catalina Island in October. More details will be announced in a future Spectator. In the meantime, please sign up on our Interest-list in the Mail Room.

We have received several requests to go on this trip again, so we’re putting out an Interest Only sign-up sheet, to see who’s ready for a New Year’s Eve get-away. We hope you’ll join us for another music-filled Jazzdagen Tour, where you can enjoy toe-tapping jazz from morning to night, sailing on Holland America’s MS Eurodam, departing Sunday, December 30, 2018 and returning Sunday, January 6, 2019. Our ports-of-call are Puerto Vallarta, an artistic cobblestone village, with chic shopping and busy open markets; Mazatlan, a cosmopolitan city with its interesting history and culture; and Cabo San Lucas, with its beautiful beaches. While in port, we’ll have the opportunity to participate in any of the interesting on-shore excursions. Prices for this trip will vary depending on your stateroom selection. Please sign up in the Mail Room if you’re interested in this trip. For more information, please call Melissa at # 8087.

On April 27 in NYC, Casa resident Betty Fussell won a 2018 culinary Oscar for food writing when inducted by the James Beard Foundation into their Cookbook Hall of Fame. She joins such former winners as Julia Child, MFK Fisher, Calvin Trilllin in this award for “a body of work that has had a significant and enduring impact on the way we cook and understand food.” Over six decades, Betty authored more than a dozen books and countless essays in national newspapers & magazines (NY Times, LA Times, New Yorker, Saveur, Vogue). A stage adaptation of her memoir, My Kitchen Wars, played in LA and NYC. Her many earlier awards included the JB Foundation’s Who’s Who in Food & Beverage in America. Her 2017 essay collection, Eat, Live, Love, Die, reveals her passionate interest in asking “how come?” rather than “how to?”. She hopes to answer both questions in her current work, How To Cook A Coyote, which she hopes to finish in her forthcoming 91st year.
