CASA HEALTH LECTURE WITH JERE LIFSHITZ
"The Nurses' Health Study: What We Have Learned"
Thursday, October 24 - 3:30 pm - Auditorium
Jere Lifshitz, MS, RN will enlighten us on the results of over 40 years of data collection from the Nurses’ Health Study (NHS). This monumentally important epidemiological study began following nurses in 1976, with the goal of better understanding the risk factors for major chronic diseases in women. It is now in its third wave, including men and children, having enrolled more than 275,000 participants. The success of the NHS is due to the long-standing dedication of the participating nurses and investigators. The investigators, from the Harvard Medical School and School of Public Health, are leaders in developing and evaluating questionnaire-based methods to assess health factors, such as diet, physical activity and adiposity. You may not be familiar with the NHS, but you are surely aware of the results as the data have shaped countless public health recommendations, worldwide. For example, the NHS helped uncover early links between cigarette smoking and cardiovascular disease, and between postmenopausal obesity and breast cancer. The data collected have made many important contributions to scientific knowledge and contributed to public health. Former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Donna Shalala, called the NHS "one of the most significant studies ever conducted on the health of women.” Come and hear what we have learned from over four decades of the NHS from a nurse who has been a long-time participant in the study.
