CASA Health Lecture Series: New Frontiers in Brain Exploration

Time

10:30 am - Auditorium

Details

Join four highly distinguished faculty members from UC Santa Barbara for a fascinating journey into scientific research currently being conducted on our campus. To kick off the lecture, Assistant Professor Emily Jacobs will highlight recent work investigating memory changes that occur early in the aging process of menopause. This is a fantastic look at how women's brains are highly functional as they age, contrary to media's portrayal of mature women. Assistant Professor Michael Goard will lecture on the use of laser microscopes to investigate brain activity in mice. He hopes to understand how mice remember new information, and to develop new approaches for improving memory and learning. We will dive into the world of dosing and delivering drugs with Professor of Chemistry Kevin Plaxco, who asks "why does a woman weighing 130 pounds receive the same drug dosage as a man weighing 190 pounds?" Finally Professor Scott Grafton helps us explore the question of what happens to us when we hit our heads, and the answer that the brain has a great capacity to recover from injury and includes techniques to examine the brain's hidden mysteries. Don't miss this very special lecture! For more information, please contact Cami Bonavita at #8054
