CAFÉ DES ARTISTES: RODIN SCULPTURES

Tuesday, January 9 - 4:00 pm - Auditorium. Arrive at 4:00 pm, and enjoy a glass of wine and Chef Michael’s hors d’oeuvres at your café table. At 4:30 pm, the slideshow/lecture begins, presented by the S. B. Museum of Art volunteer docent Kathryn Padgett. Rodin provided a foundation for greater experimentation in 20th century sculpture. Come and learn more about this extraordinary artist. A few spaces remain on the sign-up sheet in the Mail Room; please sign up by January 4. 

NELSON HOWARD RESIDENT SERIES: DR. DAVID WILLIAMS PRESENTS "PHOTOGRAPHS FROM AFRICA"

Friday, January 12 - 4:00 pm - Auditorium. The first Nelson Howard series presentation for 2018 will feature David Williams, M.D. Dr Williams recently traveled to Africa where he photographed the landscape, animals, and birds of three countries. Working alongside several professional photographers, he spent eight hours a day, seven days a week for a month, capturing the beauty of Africa. Please join us and enjoy short movie clips, time-lapse photography, still photos, and more. Following the presentation, a reception will be held in the Music Room. 

A PRESENTATION BY C-CHANGE CONVERSATIONS

Thursday, January 25 - 4:30 pm - Auditorium. Please join us for a presentation by C-Change Conversations, an organization run by a team of volunteers promoting non-partisan discussion about the risks and opportunities associated with climate change. With clear, unbiased, scientific information, they provide a forum for community members across the political spectrum to learn from and question experts on the potential impacts of climate change on our economy, geopolitical security, health and safety. In 2017, the program Climate Change Primer, developed with support from Climate Central and the Yale Program for Climate Communications, launched a nationwide tour of the primer which continues to be received with enthusiasm by civic-minded citizens of all political persuasions. Our presenter will be Kathleen Biggins, who has a B.A. from the University of Virginia where she was an Echols Scholar. After graduating, she attended the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg, Germany, where she studied International Relations as a Rotary Scholar. This presentation is brought to us by resident Jean Keely’s daughter, Kathy Herring, who is a volunteer with the C-Change organization.

ANNUAL RESIDENTS' ASSOCIATION MEETING

Monday, January 8 - 10:00 am - Auditorium. on their 2017 activities. The Residents’ Council will present its nomination for President. The Residents’ Association’s Nominating Committee will present the slate for the 2018-2020 class of Council and the new members of the Nominating Committee. Residents will be asked to vote on these nominations. Please plan to attend this IMPORTANT meeting!

TEN WEEK MAH JONGG CLASS

Beginning Tuesday, January 16 - March 20.
Beginner/Intermediate - 10:00 am - 12:00 pm.
Intermediate/Advanced - 1:00 - 3:00 pm.
 Keep your mind nimble and your hands moving while you have a great time with your Casa friends! Come learn to play the popular tile game, or if you’re already a player, improve your skills! Judi Amsel, an experienced Mah Jongg teacher, will lead this ten-week course, beginning January 16. Cost for the course is $65, to be billed. The sign-up sheet is in the Mail Room. 

NEW YEAR - NEW CLASSES! MINDFULNESS WITH DR. SHERMAN

Wednesday, January 17 & 31 - 10:30 am - Education Center. Come and try something new in the New Year, as Dr. Sherman’s bi-weekly classes will resume on January 17. This easy-to-learn technique enables us to have a state achieved by focusing one’s awareness, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings and thoughts. Classes are open to all, though if you’d like to receive a reminder notice and reserve a space in class, please sign up in the Mail Room.
